The Followers of Jesus as forgetful. Comments to: adebelak@redeemerluth.com

I really thought someone would make the comment that I choose this topic because I forgot to post earlier in the week. You are so kind. The Followers of Jesus as forgetful are gifted with the power to not let the past rule us. It is not a gift that always works. And yet, when we allow ourselves the time to pray - think - meditate - imagine, the terrors and wounds and fears of the past may give way to the wonder of that which is next. Sometimes I wonder if forgetfulness is also a part of hopefulness. We are not constrained by the stuff that can beat us down - rather we are liberated to set ourselves wandering into the future of the love of Christ within our own lives. The Followers of Jesus as forgetful do not forget in order to get away with anything - that must always be held up among us. We will face and all of the facts about our lives and yet we will never let them win the day or destroy what is possible within the advancing Reign of God.

God of New Life and All Hopefulness, keep us ever present within the embrace of you Reign that keeps moving into this day. Amen.

The Followers of Jesus as wakeful. Responses can be sent to - adebelak@redeemerluth.com.

The Followers of Jesus as wakeful means we are to keep things stirring - mixing things up - awaking the world to new ways to experience the day. I would submit that we can only do that when we are familiar with the stories of faith that have been lived out before us. Many of those stories come to us through the Scriptures - some of those stories come by way of seeing them open up and come alive around us - some of those stories are happening right now and we are being called to be involved in them.  Being wakeful means we draw from  many side of our lives and build up a character of love and hopefulness that will shape how we live as individuals and as a community of the followers of Jesus. Being wakeful also means we need to shake our heads so that what we think is so firm and settled and immoveable will be rattled just a bit and we will be awakened to a new day and a new way to live within this day.

God of Love and All Hopefulness, take hold of us and wake us up to enter this day. Amen.

The Followers of Jesus as wakeful. Any comments to: adebelak@redeemerluth.com

The Followers of Jesus as wakeful is a state of action and restfulness. We are to be eternally available to act within the context of the world around us. When we see violence and brokenness we are to be awake to such a reality and act out in the ways of Jesus. That means we need to counter the violence with nonviolence and be healing agents when we see brokenness. We are also to be people who rest in God alone. That restfulness may mean that we do not pursue the ways of the world around us. We rest within the values and visions and character that we see in the life of Jesus - we take all that on as our own. Being ready to act and able to rest can be a reality for us. The Followers of Jesus as wakeful can be like this whenever the Spirit helps us to see the power of the empires around us and then encourages us to act contrary to them. We are not to be a people who settle for what is. This includes old notions of what is to be and it includes the fleeting images of what is popular at the moment. I the weekly bible study we are working through the story of Joseph in Genesis. Joseph had beneath him a foundation - a character - that enabled him to be forthright in the face of the temptress (Potipher's wife) and free to speak out in the world of dreams that will change the face of the powerful empire of Pharaoh. When we are wakeful, we are never without the stories that will wake us up to the vision of God's Reign - even as we are face-to-face with those who want nothing to do with such a vision.

God of Love and All Hopefulness, ground us and hold us and then release us into the world in which we live each. Send us out as your body in the world. Amen.

The Followers of Jesus as wakeful. If you have comments - adebelak@redeemerluth.com .

The Followers of Jesus as wakeful move around through the day just as all others. That is because we are like all others - we are human - we are vulnerable - we are able to change the ways of the world. Unfortunately, we often find the ways of the world to be just the way we want to be. Therefore, we close our eyes - we sleep - we ignore how the world is leading us. The Followers of Jesus as wakeful are people who have heard stories of a new way to live within a world that is consuming itself within its own violence. Rather that build walls and add to our collection of weapons and try to figure out how to keep our stuff away from them, we have been dreaming of another way to live within the day. Those dreams become a part how we are wakeful. We have dreams - we have visions - we have been washed for new life - we have had the breath of God whip through our ordinary lives and begin to carry us off into the promised land of God's Peace. The Followers of Jesus as wakeful present ourselves within this day wide awake carrying dreams and visions with us and translating them into the acts within ordinary lives.

God of Love and All Hopefulness, fill us with the dreams and visions of the life that awaits us within the steps of this day. Amen.
