Jumping now to a section called "Regulation via Imagination" - again from Walter Brueggemann in "An Unsettling God." What we have in the biblical text is a human document, a product of daring, evocative human imagination. But serious readers of this text of human imagination regularly are recruited, in the process of being addressed, to the conviction that what is surely daring artistic human imagination is, at the same time, an act of divine revelation. There is a long context to this piece that I will add on tomorrow. This was simply a wonderful stopping point for me. In other words, it made my imagination go running. I think that many people would not like what is being said here. And yet, I find myself wonderfully comforted by this talk of faithful imagination. In many ways it helps me see what an important part of everyday life is this connection to our God and to the everyday nature of our lives. What if - it was left up to us to write something down. Would we blow it off - leave it to others - think that we are no worthy of taking that leap into the realm of God's revelation through our imagination?!? This all makes me think that those who sat down to write knew that something more shapes us and pulls us into life that is not yet completely at hand. How would you sit down to write about faithfulness and the life that is called forth from all who are claimed by this creative God who does not stray from us? Even though the book is "written" we must continue to envision ourselves as people with 'daring artistic human imagination' so that the real presence of God's living Reign will be given a face. Connection: Even if you don't see yourself as artistic, allow yourself to use your daring human imagination to wonder about what will become the rest of you day. O God, who gifts us with the ability to imagine the life that is more full than the present seems to allow, nurture our imagination and unleash your Holy Spirit upon us. Amen. |
