Redeemer Devotions - February 8, 2012

Adventures... in Hope - Redeemer Devotions

So now we enter chapter two of 1 Peter

Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation - if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

The ways of the powers around us - the power that is so easy for us to follow - are to be put aside. All the stuff named here are character traits that bring division, brokenness, separation, and death in the way death has  ruled forever. WE are people living within another vision for life. We know the taste of it and when it is close to us, we can taste it and it brings into existence a life that is as good as the promises of our Lord, God. So, each time we see and smell and hear the same-old, same-old of the world - remember the taste and refreshment of the love of God that is given to us from the beginning. I like to return to the hymn often sung during the distribution of Holy Communion - Taste and See.The nurturing and life sustaining Word/Life that is given to us as God's Beloved is enough to turn us around. This is meant to be a word of encouragement each time we face the world as it is.

Connection: When troubled - when confused - when about to give into the ways things always are - breathe and settle down and imagine the way our God holds us and wants life for each of us to be full of the love that is the food of God's Reigning promise.

In the middle of what is so common, O God, you promise to feed us with your love. We know we need nothing more. Encourage us to eat up and live. Amen.
