Here is a good way to look at what I have quoted in the last week - Alison summarizes: ...the presence of the crucified and risen Lord to the disciples revealed that humans are wrong about God and about humanity, not simply wrong as mistaken, but wrong as actively involved in death. And this being wrong does not matter any longer, because we can now receive the truth, and thus life, from the forgiven victim. The whole pattern of death is one into which we sew ourselves. That is, we are vitally a part of the brokenness that makes for victims and seeks to control and lends a hand to the cycle of death that seems to be winning the day. But then there is the resurrection. There is the radical statement of life that pulls back the curtain so we can - once and for all - see the lie that we have fallen into and bought. I hear Alison then saying "forgetaboutit" - as in let's live - let's deny death its power - let's view the truth - let's review the victim and the gift of life that comes in the shape of the one the power of death (our power) has tried to steal. We learn from the forgiven victim that beyond the power of death and its lies, is life and the beginning of more than we ever anticipated. This is where the saints and martyrs get their vitality for life. They understand in their heart the power of the one who is the alpha and omega - the one who begins and ends all things - the one who changes the end into the beginning. So, they go for it - they live within the Reign of eternal life. Connection: I'm becoming less and less interested in watching the power of death rule - and to see that in my viewing of its many sides, I am aligning with its power. But how - how do I move out of it - what is the radical notion of life that is pulling each of us into a day we have yet to experience fully?! O God of life, continue to bring life into our view even as we appear to settle for the way of death all around us. Amen. |
