Redeemer Devotions for Janurary 5, 2015

Adventures... in Hope - Redeemer Devotions

The Reign of God as staging. If you have any comments adebelak@redeemerluth.com .

The Reign of God as staging anticipates that a story or a play is about to begin. In place is the foundation for all that will come. I remember being at the Shakespeare theater when it opened soon before I was in Cambridge for a semester abroad. The stage floor was made of squares - not sure of their size. These squares were really like pillars that could rise up ten or twenty feet or simply a foot or two. Therefore, the whole scenery of the stage could be transformed into any set that was needed. Balconies - store fronts - bridges - whatever was needed. It is from that staging that the action took place. Life happened in the midst of the staging. The Reign of God as staging invites us to live out our lives within the bounds of God's imagination. This is never meant to be restrictive, it is meant to be expansive. Even when the staging is minimal - a chair to stage right - life takes shape - the drama begins. One question for this week will be to consider the kind of staging each of us is handed when we are actors bringing the Reign of God to life in this time - in this place.

O God of love and new life, the curtain is rising. Be with us within the action of this day.  Amen.
