Redeemer Devotions for April 1, 2015

Adventures... in Hope - Redeemer Devotions

The Followers of Jesus as a new humanity. If you have any comments  - adebelak@redeemerluth.com .

The Followers of Jesus as a new humanity really are meant to go for a new life and take on its way. I showed clips of the movie Gandhi to the confirmation class on Monday. I wanted them to see a witness to nonviolent demonstration that never works for the destruction of the other side and never find a point in which they will begin to lord/rule over others. For when that happens, the oppressed become the oppressors over night. Instead, the Followers of Jesus as a new humanity resist the expectations and the 'common courtesies' of the culture. For so often, such niceties are used to keep thing hidden so that the many faces of violence can rule the day and rule the lives of people - even when we keep saying we are a peaceable people. The Followers of Jesus as a new humanity are invited into lives that become living demonstrations of the life of Jesus in our time and in our lives. These are also demonstrations that walk up into the arena of the power of the day and refuse to keep the machine going along its way. Jesus did that during the week we label as holy. His actions uncovered the body of dis-ease that was the cultural players of the day - Rome - Jewish politicians - Jewish elites. We could very quickly note the violence of the dis-ease today that appears to be holy, honorable, and just. And yet, if we look again and follow Jesus' steps, well - be watchful - be careful -  be bold.

O God of love and new life, guide us that we will walking within your peaceable Reign and not the false halls of peace that try to reign over the world.   Amen.
