Redeemer Devotions for April 6, 2015

Adventures... in Hope - Redeemer Devotions

The Followers of Jesus as taking our place. If you have any comments  - adebelak@redeemerluth.com .

The Followers of Jesus as taking our place draws us beyond our own self-interests. We take our place on the way to the cross. That is a ways we take on - a way that is not simply for my causes or mine kind of people or my favorite issue or the cause I  find to be most important to me. All of the actions I just mentioned can be good and honorable tasks. And yet, Jesus goes to the cross not out of self-interest or self-preservation or self-security. He goes for the well-being of all - without passing judgment on anyone. He goes to demonstrate life that can be for an with all - even the ones who are a part of the lynching party.  Unfortunately, it is just too damn easy to make following Jesus into another reason we can go about our lives the way we want them. Continue hating anyone who might hurt us - always having rocks on hand to throw at those who will not love us as we want to be loved or accept us as we want to be accepted. The Followers of Jesus as taking our place do not take our place as we have designed it - we take our place within a life that will be sacrificed for any and all. This is a sacramental life - a reflection of the holy - an embodiment of the truly human one - a love that truly lets no one go.

O God of love and new life, help us rest in you alone - you alone.  Amen.
