Redeemer Devotions for January 16, 2013

More on God as all powerful.

I have come to dislike watching football as much as I love to watch it - especially

as the season comes to an end. What do I dislike about football? The fact that these

big, athletic guys mock the power of God. God is a god for winners - a god for guys

with good hands - a god who scores and scores again - a god who keeps me from being

injured. That god we hear being praised at football games is more the god of the

underworld - death - division - duh, the evil one. That's right, all that pointing

into the air with the index finger high simply shows the values of the world that

wants winners according to how winners rule. Interesting how the evil one always

wants us to think as though s/he is God. Oh - the small 'g' on this god is intended.

To praise God for a touchdown or a victory is to praise a limited god - a false

god. It is to make what we call God Almighty into god of the powers of the world

- nothing more. God as all powerful is the God who is to be praise after a pass

is dropped - a game is lost - a career ends on a bad note. Then, God is all powerful

and is not merely aligned with what we consider 'winners'. When God is the maker

of winners, this god has nothing to do with the power of forgiveness - serving

others - standing with and being on the side of the least - the lowest - the lost

- the left out - the fumblers.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. That is - all

things - all that will be - all that has ever been - even the losers and the ones

who fall short and blow it. There is no other God but this God - of all creation.

O God of love and new life, you are the one who sustains us and nurtures us and

moves us to live beyond our wants so that you face will shine among us in all that

times of our lives. We praise, O God, Almighty. Amen.
