Redeemer Devotions for January 28, 2013

Nothing like waking up and having to deal with unknown water running through the

house - thus the delay. Today I want to move to God as Light.

There are many images in Scripture that take note of the power of light - the mere

presence of light. When the God of Love and Justice Rolling and All Power finds

expression within the world, there is light. It is the story telling of the people

of Israel who were to be a light to the nations. That is, their life together -

their life as the living expression of the image of God - would be a light providing

direction, guidance, example, and witness. God as Light is the wholeness of God's

presence that can take the brutality of the world and show God's beloved community

another way to go. Usually we say it is light in the midst of darkness. It does

not take much light to turn a room trapped in darkness one in which we begin to

see what is all around us. Light uncovers what is taking place around us - both

the evil and the good. The light comes in many ways. Sometimes it is the question

that is asked that exposes a lie. Sometimes it is truthfulness that is put up alongside

what is and therefore, gives us a bit of a fix on whether we live within truth or

non-truth. Sometimes it is the acts of mercy and forgiveness that reveals our God

in the middle of a dis-ease and vengeance filled world.

O God of love and new life, be the light that guides us this day. Amen.
