Redeemer Devotions for March 5, 2014

Adventures... in Hope - Redeemer Devotions

This week: God as hanging around. If you have any comments - adebelak@redeemerluth.com .

God as hanging around will not simply get up and leave. The body on the cross is dead weight - if left out for days the birds would be feasting on it. God as hanging around is God tied to our drama - our drama unto death. There is no flying away or 'spiriting' off to heaven. God as hanging around - hangs there with us. But in the hanging with us, God as hanging around teaches us how God's beloved stay put within the days of our lives. We hang around as though God's claim on us is the only claim that has power for life. All other claims - the ones that scare us - manipulate us - pervert us - overwhelm us - the ones that offer us short cuts - the ones that are outright lies - are momentary and cheap. Those other claims try to move us but they give us no life. God as hanging around is a life that is free to live only out of the embrace of our God who - in Christ hanging on the cross - is humanity to the fullest - not as the world defines us but as God created us from the very beginning. The Truly Human one hangs around trusting in the power of being a human who is beloved of God.

O God of love and new life, in your act of hanging with us we are shown the way of God's love for us and God's love that will be the food that sustains us. Glory to you, O God.  Amen.
