Redeemer Devotions for March 6, 2014

Adventures... in Hope - Redeemer Devotions

This week: God as hanging around. If you have any comments - adebelak@redeemerluth.com .

Yesterday I wrote that God as hanging around is dead weight. I read it again and it seemed odd - frightening. The dead weight of the day - the weight that is discarded and thrown into the garbage pit - is what Jesus was to the empire of the day. He was dead weight that could and should be thrown out - left out to rot - remind people not to act up or act out. God as hanging around is the God that sides with anyone who is considered to be garbage or left overs. God as hanging around lingers - eternally - alongside and with a humanity that is not able to make it in the world and a humanity that some think can be thrown out. God as hanging around is brought to life today in the shape of you and me - the Church - the followers of Jesus - those left here to be dead weight in regard to the values of empires and religious elites. God as hanging around is the power for new life that comes even after the world has evaluated us as worthless and sets us out to dry and die. We will stay around - we will hang with the others who do not walk in the ways of the world's powers. Dead weight that comes to life is always a surprise - that's us - a surprising presentation of our Lord, Jesus - as us.

O God of love and new life, bring to life that which is call dead and raise us up to that life that is sustained by your enduring Spirit.  Amen.
