Adventures... in Hope - Redeemer Devotions

The Reign of God as bounteous strength. If you have any comments - adebelak@redeemerluth.com .

The Reign of God as bounteous strength made me chuckle a bit. James Alison uses these two words in this way, Understanding ourselves as created is not the application to ourselves of a description deduced from an a priori vision of 'how things came to be', but the growing recognition of ourselves as peripheral recipients on the way towards being brought into existence by a bounteous strength which is massively prior to us, and whose intentions we have no reason to suspect. It almost reminded be of fantasy creatures whose power is so great we can only wonder how so much power can be present in one being. The Reign of God as bounteous strength reminded me first of the 'big kitty' in Monsters Inc. Something as big as that - something that is able and willing to step in and be present with us to comfort - console - care - caress. I have heard of people of massive strength. Sometimes when I look at linemen in the NFL I am amazed at their size and speed and power. But I would never consider such a great combination of words as bounteous power. And yet, when I think of the Reign of God, bounteous power makes me smile and at the same time be put to ease for the sake of living the life that comes to all of us who dwell in that Reign.

O God of love and new life, take us in and shape us and make us courageous as we live within your Reign even as the world does not respect its power.  Amen.
