This week: God as wonder. If you have any comments - adebelak@redeemerluth.com . I find that going at the task of preaching throws me into the arena of wondering about God and life and what can be. Rather than taking something at face value - taking the words on the page literally - I often find myself wondering about what was going on - what made them do that - why in the world would someone act like that - how could that have really happened. I think God as wonder throws out those questions. Anyone who reads the Scriptures is urged to dig more deeply into what is being said and how does it connect to the life of the Reign of God as it is breaking in - right now. This week I'm wondering about John the Baptizer - wild and crazy guy. What drove him out into the wilderness? Why were some of the religious insiders - the power people - coming out to be baptized by him? What was the connection between John and Jesus before we hear of Jesus' baptism in the River Jordan? God as wonder - in my thinking - is thrilled that we would ask such questions and wonder about more than that which one writer noted years ago. We are invited to wonder about real life - even if it from a time ago. As we wonder, the story becomes a text that is more broad and begins to open up our eyes to that which we may not have ever considered. I think that thrills this God as wonder. O God of love and new life, as we wander through life, keep us wondering about your blessed Reign and how it is the source of life among us. Amen. |
